Settlement and Social Services

 

 
   

The Settlement and Social Services Department offers a wide range of culturally and linguistically appropriate services to immigrants, newcomers, citizens, refugees and community residents of various ages. Major services include settlement programs for adults and youth, seniors' services, community development and the Community Access Program (CAP).

ISAP Settlement Services
Settlement services are provided under  the ISAP (Immigration Settlement and Adaptation) Program, funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.   A wide range of programs including information & referrals, one-on-one counseling, form filling, information and orientation sessions, interpretation and translations, employment-related assistance, health and family services support, English language circles, itinerant services to various locations and information/workshop sessions.   Programming is available for newcomer youth and adults.   These services are offered to landed immigrants, convention refugees and live-in care-givers holding a valid work permit.

Newcomer Settlement Program (NSP) Services
Settlement services are provided under the NSP - Newcomer Settlement Program which is funded by the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. Services include information & referrals, one-on-one counseling, form filling, information and orientation workshops, interpretation and translations, employment-related assistance, health and family services support, and social support groups. These services are offered to all newcomers to Canada including citizens,  permanent residents (holding a PR card), refugee claimants, and visitors.

Seniors Services
Our Seniors Services offers a variety of programs and services to seniors living within the community. Programs include regular Tai Chi and fitness classes; special interest groups such as Cantonese opera, Chinese dance, and calligraphy.We also offer daily supportive counseling, information and referrals, form-filling assistance, and educational workshops relating to health, elder abuse awareness, safety issues, and other matters of interest to seniors. Seniors can also enjoy regular social networking events such as birthday celebrations, day trips and festive celebrations.

Community Access Program (CAP)
The Community Access Program is a Government of Canada initiative, administered by Industry Canada, which aims to provide Canadians with affordable public access to the Internet and the skills they need to use it effectively.
